Santa Cesarea Terme
12 km · 18 min by car from MoreBnB
The most dramatic stretch of coast: Liberty-style villas perched on the cliff, sulphur thermal baths inside natural caves, and a sea the colour of cobalt because the floor drops away suddenly. Not your average seaside town.
The thermal baths
Santa Cesarea's sulphur waters surface in four natural sea-caves (Solfurea, Solfatara, Fetida, Gattulla). From late April to late October you can take thermal baths, mud treatments, inhalations. Price: ~25 € day pass. It isn't a chic spa — it's a simple, slightly old-fashioned place, and it works.
Villa Sticchi
The town's icon: a Moorish-Liberty villa from 1894, sand-coloured dome, Moorish windows. The inside isn't open (private), but the façade and the sunset view are worth a five-minute stop on the bend.
Swimming
Access stairs to the sea run all along the SS173 (the upper coastal road). Look for Porto Miggiano: a hidden cove, very deep water, a bar on the cliff above. No umbrellas. Wear shoes to walk on the rocks.
Grotta Palombara
From Porto Miggiano on foot (or by canoe), a semi-submerged cave where the water turns electric blue from light entering through a hole in the ceiling. Swim into it. Magic.
When to stop
Pull over at Bar Eden on the main road (heading toward Castro). Coffee and almond granita with a view that opens onto Porto Miggiano bay. The break that saves a day on the coast.
When to go
May–June and September for the thermal baths. For swimming: all summer; morning or late afternoon.
Practical tips
- Thermal baths: book a day ahead in July–August.
- Reef shoes essential — no sandy lidos here.
- Sulphur smell: present but mild; it fades in a few minutes. Not the tap water.
- Kids under 6 not admitted to the thermal baths.

Frequently asked questions
Are the baths for casual visitors too?
Yes. You can buy a day pass just to use the thermal pool and relax area. No medical prescription needed.
Is there a sand beach?
No, all rocks. For sand head up to Otranto (15 min) or down to Marina di Andrano.
Are dolphins really seen here?
Sometimes yes, May to July, especially in the early morning. Not guaranteed. The Castro boats occasionally spot them.

The easternmost point of Italy. An Aragonese castle on the sea, a 12th-century floor mosaic that leaves you silent, and the smell of warm pasticciotti at dawn. Otranto carries itself — just don't show up at noon in August.
BeachBaia dei Turchi

Among the clearest water in Salento — the white-sand bottom reflects the light. Ten minutes on foot through a pine wood to get there. No bar, no umbrella for rent: bring everything.
