Baia dei Turchi
22 km · 30 min by car from MoreBnB
Among the clearest water in Salento — the white-sand bottom reflects the light. Ten minutes on foot through a pine wood to get there. No bar, no umbrella for rent: bring everything.
How to get there
From Otranto, head north along the coastal road toward Frassanito. Look for "Baia dei Turchi" signs — the paid parking (5–7 € for the day) sits about 500 m from the beach. A path through the pine wood drops down to the sea.
When to arrive
Before 9 AM in high season, or the parking fills and you'll be a kilometre away. After 5:30 PM the beach empties and the light turns honey-coloured — that's our favourite hour.
What's there
Pale sand, transparent water, low rocks you can dive from. A thin sandbar detaches from the mainland during certain tides. Pines behind for shade. No bar, no bathrooms — you walk back to the parking.
Bring water, at least two litres per person. Nothing is sold on the beach.
Why the name
"Bay of the Turks": Ottoman troops landed here in 1480 before the siege of Otranto. The name is romantic; the history isn't.
Nearby
Five minutes by car: the busier Frassanito beach (lidos, bars) and the Lago di Alimini nature reserve (migrating birds and reed beds — a one-hour walk).
When to go
June and September. July and August: go early or late. In spring it's nearly empty.
Practical tips
- Footwear: solid soles — the path has roots and stones.
- No food on the beach (litter). Eat first at the Frassanito lido or bring a packed lunch.
- Red flag = no swimming. Strong north winds create currents — respect the flag always.
- A seasonal bus from Otranto runs several times a day in July/August.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a lifeguard?
Yes, in high season (mid-June → end of September) there's a town-run lifeguard. But this is a public beach, not a lido: the lifeguard watches, doesn't serve.
Can I bring my dog?
Off-season yes; in high season no on the sand, but you can bring them into the pine wood area. Always on a leash.
Is the water really that clear?
Yes, when the sea is calm. With a scirocco wind the sand kicks up and the water turns milky for a few hours.

The easternmost point of Italy. An Aragonese castle on the sea, a 12th-century floor mosaic that leaves you silent, and the smell of warm pasticciotti at dawn. Otranto carries itself — just don't show up at noon in August.

A fishing town perched above its little harbour — one of the few natural ports on this stretch of Adriatic coast. You walk down to the marina: five fish restaurants, two bars, and a cove where you dive.
