Otranto

The easternmost point of Italy. An Aragonese castle on the sea, a 12th-century floor mosaic that leaves you silent, and the smell of warm pasticciotti at dawn. Otranto carries itself — just don't show up at noon in August.

When to arrive

7 AM is our preferred hour. The harbour wakes up, fishermen clean their nets, the city walls are still glowing orange. By 11 the old-town lanes become a river of people — if you can't come early, come after 6 PM when the place breathes again.

The Cathedral mosaic

The 12th-century floor mosaic in the Cathedral is what Otranto is for. A fifty-metre tree of life, biblical scenes, sea monsters, Alexander the Great carried into the sky by griffins. Take your time. No ticket; a donation is welcome.

The Castle

Aragonese, late 1400s, built after the Turkish invasion of 1480 (a long, tragic story — ask the castle warden, he knows more than the guidebook). The halls host rotating exhibitions; some are worth it, some aren't. The walk along the ramparts is always worth it.

Where to eat

For fish, L'Altro Baffo (book ahead). For evening pizza, da Mamma Lina (a short walk from the walls). For a coffee with a view, Caffè Brunetti on the ramparts. Skip the seafront places with five-language menus: triple the price, half the plate.

The walk along the ramparts

From the castle, the sunset walk along the ramparts is always worth it — bring water. The Punta Palascìa lighthouse, the easternmost point of Italy, is a few kilometres south instead: a few minutes by car. From some stretches you can see Baia dei Turchi, if you know where to look.

When to go

May–June and September. The Cathedral mosaic is beautiful year-round. Skip the August 15th week.

Practical tips

  • Parking: leave the car at P.zza Castello (paid) or in the lots to the south, 10 min walk.
  • Cathedral: cover shoulders and legs — it's an active church.
  • Sunday morning at the Castle there's a second-hand book market (rare, worth it).

Frequently asked questions

  • How long do I need for Otranto?

Half a day is enough for the old town, the Castle and the Cathedral. A full day if you want a swim under the walls and sunset on the ramparts.

  • Can I swim in Otranto?

Yes — there's a small rocky beach right under the Castle walls, and quiet coves towards Baia delle Orte to the south, reachable on foot.

  • Is the train a good option?

Only from Lecce (direct, 1h 20). From outside the region the connections are slow — drive instead.
