Porto Selvaggio

55 km · 60 min by car from MoreBnB

A protected nature park on the Ionian coast, in the municipality of Nardò: you leave the car and walk twenty minutes through a pine forest down to a rocky bay where the water is cold from underground springs. Above, the Torre dell'Alto. No services: bring water and proper shoes.

The park

Porto Selvaggio is a protected natural area of about 400 hectares: pine forest, Mediterranean scrub, cliff and sea. No buildings, no beach clubs. You reach it only on foot, leaving the car at the entrance lots.

The walk

From the parking a shaded path crosses the pine forest and drops to the bay in about 15–20 minutes. It's easy but the ground is stony: closed shoes. Down it smells of pine and sea; for the climb back, take it easy.

The water

The bay is rock and pebble, no sand. The water is clear and surprisingly cold: freshwater springs surface on the bottom. Deep from the start, superb for swimming.

Torre dell'Alto

On the headland stands Torre dell'Alto, a 16th-century coastal tower overlooking the bay. A short scenic path reaches it — worth the detour for the view over the gulf.

Good to know

There are no bars, umbrellas or bathrooms: what you carry is what you have. It's the farthest of the destinations on this list (Ionian side): plan a full day for it.

When to go

May–June and September. In summer go early morning: the parking fills and there's little shade in the bay.

Practical tips

  • Bring water: nothing is sold inside the park.
  • Closed shoes: the path and the sea access are over stone and roots.
  • No shade on the shore (rock only): the shade is in the pine forest, along the path.
  • It's far (Ionian side, ~1 hour): plan a full day, not a quick stop.
