A tiny fishing inlet south of Otranto where — legend says — Aeneas landed, fleeing Troy. Today it's known for sea urchins in season and for the Grotta dei Cervi, regarded as the most important painted sanctuary of the European Neolithic — which is, however, closed to the public.

The inlet

A fjord in miniature: two rows of low houses, a few boats hauled up on the shore, a tongue of pebbles at the far end where you swim. The water is clean and sheltered. This isn't an umbrella beach: it's a small fishing spot with a couple of trattorias.

Aeneas, by legend

Tradition — taken up by Virgil — has Aeneas landing here after fleeing Troy, his first step on Italian soil. It's legend, not history: but it gives this tiny cove a weight you don't expect.

Sea urchins

In season Porto Badisco means ricci: opened fresh, eaten with bread, washed down with white wine. Ask at the local trattorias. (Urchin harvesting is now regulated — respect the closed periods.)

The Grotta dei Cervi — closed to the public

Above the inlet opens the Grotta dei Cervi, discovered in 1970: kilometres of corridors with hundreds of pictographs in ochre and guano, the largest complex of Neolithic wall art in Europe. It cannot be visited: because of its fragility the cave is closed to the public and can only be experienced through reconstructions, exhibitions and virtual material.

When to go

Outside August the cove is quiet and authentic. In August there's very little room in the water. For urchins, the cold months of the year — but check the fishing bans.

When to go

May–June and September. Avoid August for the crowding. For urchins: the cold months, within the permitted periods.

Practical tips

  • Tiny spot: no beach clubs, little parking. Come outside peak hours.
  • Urchins: eat them at the local trattorias; respect the closed fishing periods.
  • The Grotta dei Cervi can't be visited: don't look for a way in — it's closed and guarded.
  • Reef shoes: sea access is over pebbles and rock.

Frequently asked questions

  • Can I visit the Grotta dei Cervi?

No. To protect the pictographs the cave has been closed to the public for years; you can only experience it through exhibitions, documentaries and virtual reconstructions.

  • Is it a family beach?

It's a small pebble-and-rock cove with no beach services. Fine for a quiet swim, less so for a day with umbrella and sand.

  • Did Aeneas really land here?

It's a literary tradition tied to the Aeneid, not an established historical fact. But it's part of the place's charm.
