They call it "the Maldives of Salento", and for once the slogan lands: fine white sand, shallow transparent water that stays warm, dunes behind. This is Marina di Pescoluse, in the municipality of Salve, on the Ionian side. Great for families — and mobbed in July and August.
Why "Maldives"
A long strand of fine white sand, sea that stays shallow for tens of metres, water shifting from green to turquoise. In the right light it really does look like a tropical postcard. It's the opposite of the Adriatic's rocky coves: here it's all sand and soft seabed.
Free beach or lido
The coast alternates stretches of free beach with equipped lidos (umbrellas, loungers, bar). If you want to save, the free stretches are still there — but in August take them early. The lidos are handy with kids.
With children
The water, shallow and warm for long stretches, makes it one of the safest, easiest beaches in Salento for little ones. Dunes and pines offer a little natural shade behind the strand.
When to go
June and September are perfect: warm, good sea, fewer crowds. July and August are beautiful but packed: arrive early for parking and for a spot on the free beach.
Nearby
A few minutes away: Torre Pali and Torre Vado, and the far tip of Santa Maria di Leuca, where the Ionian and Adriatic meet. Easy to add Leuca in the afternoon.
When to go
June and September for the best balance. July–August only if you arrive early. Lovely in spring for a walk, too.
Practical tips
- Parking: paid lots behind the strand, they fill early in August.
- Free beach: arrive before 10 AM in high season to find a spot.
- Little natural shade: bring an umbrella if you're on the free stretch.
- Shallow sandy seabed: ideal for kids, great for long walks in the water.

The easternmost point of Italy. An Aragonese castle on the sea, a 12th-century floor mosaic that leaves you silent, and the smell of warm pasticciotti at dawn. Otranto carries itself — just don't show up at noon in August.
