Grotta della Zinzulusa
10 km · 16 min by car from MoreBnB
One of the most important coastal caves in the Mediterranean. Stalactites hanging like rags (in dialect, *zinzuli* — hence the name), an interior freshwater lake, endemic fauna unique in the world. Visited on foot from the cliff-side entrance.
What it is
A karst cavity formally discovered in 1793, carved by the sea for millennia into the limestone. About 150 metres long, with three chambers: the entrance hall (cathedral of stalactites), the "Conca" (freshwater lake with unique fauna), and the "Cocito" — the inner chamber, half-submerged.
Visiting
The entrance is at Castro Marina (down stairs from the cliff). Guided tour, about 30 minutes, closed shoes. Cost: 6 € adults, 4 € reduced. Open ~9 AM–7 PM, last entry one hour before closing.
Why the cave is unique
It hosts Niphargus stygius zinzulusae — a small blind crustacean that exists only here — and other troglobitic species speleologists travel from around the world to study. You won't see them (they live in deep pools), but they're there.
Pair it with Grotta Romanelli
200 metres away is Grotta Romanelli, paleolithic, with 32,000-year-old rock engravings (no longer visited inside, but visible from the sea). Castro boats do both caves in a 1.5-hour tour.
If you're claustrophobic, the first chamber is huge and bright. The inner part is narrower — ask the guide before going in.
When to go
April–October. Avoid days with heavy sea — visits may be cancelled.

- Closed shoes required. No sandals or flip-flops.
- Inside temperature: ~16 °C. Welcome in August, but bring a layer.

The easternmost point of Italy. An Aragonese castle on the sea, a 12th-century floor mosaic that leaves you silent, and the smell of warm pasticciotti at dawn. Otranto carries itself — just don't show up at noon in August.
