Cala dell'Acquaviva
11 km · 15 min by car from MoreBnB
A narrow slot in the rock between Castro and Marittima, where the water runs deep and cold because a freshwater spring rises from the bottom — hence the name. No sand: pebbles and rock platforms, a small inlet closed in by pines.
What it's like
A miniature fjord, long and narrow, wedged between two rock walls. A little pebble beach at the head of the inlet; flat rock platforms on the sides to dive from. Behind, a patch of pines — the only shade.
The water
Cold, even in July: a freshwater spring mixes with the sea below the surface (Acquaviva = "living water"). Clear, deep from the start. Great for swimmers; less so if you want to stand in the shallows.
Getting there & parking
From Poggiardo drop down toward Marittima di Diso and follow the small road to the cove. The parking is tiny and unpaved: in August it fills very early. Come early, or leave the car higher up and walk down.
When to go
June and September are ideal. In August the cove is small and packed by 9 AM. With a scirocco swell it takes backwash — pick calm days.
Nearby
A few minutes away: Castro marina (restaurants, caves) and Marina di Andrano with its "green grotto". Easy to combine in half a day.
When to go
June and September. In July–August only early morning. At its best on a calm sea.
Practical tips
- Reef shoes: the pebbles and rocks are slippery.
- No bar or services: bring water and shade.
- Tiny parking — in August arrive before 9 AM or come late afternoon.
- The water is cold: allow a few minutes to get used to it.

Frequently asked questions
Is there sand?
No: pebbles at the head of the cove and flat rocks on the sides. For sand, head down to Pescoluse or up toward Otranto.
Why is the water so cold?
A freshwater spring rises on the bottom and lowers the temperature even at the height of summer. It's normal — you adjust in a few minutes.
Is it good for kids?
The water is deep from the start and the rocks are slippery: fine for children who swim, with supervision. For little ones, a shallow sandy beach is better.

The easternmost point of Italy. An Aragonese castle on the sea, a 12th-century floor mosaic that leaves you silent, and the smell of warm pasticciotti at dawn. Otranto carries itself — just don't show up at noon in August.
